Privacy policy
This policy explains what information the BestTellMe app and this website use, and your rights. The short version: your health details stay on your phone. We have no accounts, and we don't sell or share your information. If the app crashes, it sends an anonymous crash report so we can fix it, and you can turn that off. When you photograph a label, Google's text reader on your phone sends Google technical information about how it ran, never what you photographed.
Who we are
BestTellMe is provided by Affinity International Liquor Limited, Kenny's House, Main Street, Portarlington, Co. Laois, R32 XK02, Ireland. Registered in Ireland, Companies Registration Office no. 702039. VAT no. IE03793331GH. We are the data controller. Contact: blendwisenpd@gmail.com.
What the app is for
BestTellMe compares what's listed on products with published official limits and advice. It is not a medical device: it doesn't diagnose, treat or monitor anything, and it doesn't track your cycle. Our terms of use set out exactly what it is for.
Information that stays on your phone
What you enter in the app is saved only on your phone: your life stage (for example pregnancy or breastfeeding), whether you take any medicines (including the pill), the supplements you take, your babies' ages and feeding, your cupboard, products you've scanned, and settings. We never receive it. You can delete all of it at any time in the app (Me, then Delete all my data), or by deleting the app. Your phone's own backup (iCloud or Google) may include it, under Apple's or Google's terms.
Your medicines answer
When you set up the app, we ask if you take any medicines, including the pill. You can skip it, and change it any time in Me. If you say yes, the app reminds you on every product to check with your pharmacist or GP. We don't ask which medicines, and we don't check medicines. Your answer is saved only on your phone and is never sent to us or anyone else.
Phone reminders
Reminders are off unless you turn them on (in Me, or at the end of setting up), and your phone asks your permission first. They are planned and scheduled on your phone: a week before a pack runs out, a week before your baby's next stage, and the HSE's winter vitamin D advice on 31 October. No server sends them, and nothing about you leaves your phone. The words on your lock screen never name a product, your baby or anything about your health. Turn them off in Me or in your phone's Settings; deleting your data removes every scheduled reminder.
Label photos
When you photograph a label, the text is read on your phone by Google's ML Kit. The photo and the text are not saved by the app and never leave your phone. ML Kit sends Google technical information about how it ran (your phone model and system version, the app version, how long it took, any error code and a random ID for this installation), which Google uses to check how ML Kit is working and being used. It contains nothing you photographed.
Barcode lookups
When you scan or type a barcode, the app sends only that barcode to Open Food Facts (openfoodfacts.org), a non-profit open database, to look the product up. Like any website, Open Food Facts receives your phone's internet (IP) address with the request. We send nothing else about you. Open Food Facts' own privacy policy applies to its service.
Crash reports
If the app crashes or hits an error, it sends a crash report to Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.), a service that collects app errors for us. A report contains: the type of error and a cleaned error message, where in our code it happened, the app version, your phone's operating system and version, your phone model, and, for a crash inside the phone's own system code, technical details about the phone at that moment (such as free memory, storage, and language and time zone settings) and a random ID the crash reporter creates for this installation. Before an error report leaves your phone, the app removes anything that could be about you: quoted text, web addresses, email addresses and long numbers.
A report never contains your life stage, your medicines answer, your supplements, your babies' details, your cupboard, the barcodes you scan or your label photos. There's no name, account or advertising ID, nothing links a report to you, and we don't record what you did before the crash. Like any server, Sentry receives your phone's internet (IP) address with the report; we've set it not to store it.
Reports are stored in Sentry's EU data centre in Frankfurt, Germany, and deleted after 30 days. Sentry is a US company and may access them from the USA; that transfer is protected by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and the EU Standard Contractual Clauses (and the UK addendum) in its data processing agreement. We use crash reports only to find and fix faults. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in keeping the app working safely and reliably. You can turn crash reports off at any time in the app (Me, then Send crash reports).
Subscriptions
Apple (or Google on Android) handles payment. We never see your card or bank details. To confirm that your subscription is active, the app uses RevenueCat, Inc., a subscription service that processes an anonymous app user ID and your purchase records on our behalf. It does not receive your health details. RevenueCat is based in the USA; transfers there are protected by the EU Standard Contractual Clauses (and the UK addendum) in its data processing agreement. We use this information to provide the subscription you bought (our legal basis is the contract with you).
What we don't do
- No advertising, and no advertising or tracking tools in the app.
- We do no analytics or usage tracking (Google's ML Kit sends its own technical information, see Label photos).
- We don't sell or rent information.
- This website sets no cookies.
If you email us
We use your email only to reply, and keep it for as long as needed to deal with your request.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask to access, correct or delete information we hold about you, object to its use, or ask for a copy. As your app information stays on your phone, you control it directly in the app. For anything else, email blendwisenpd@gmail.com. You can complain to the Data Protection Commission in Ireland (dataprotection.ie) or, in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Age
BestTellMe is for adults. Baby Mode is for parents and carers.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update this page and the date at the top, and tell you in the app if the change matters.
